Thinking Football Film Festival
CINEMA, FOOTBALL AND SOCIETY
Thinking Football Film Festival is a film and football festival organised by the Athletic Club Foundation in collaboration with Sala BBK
Since its first edition in 2013, the festival has grown in prestige and has become one of the most important football and film festivals in the world.
Thinking Football is held annually and during that week between twelve and twenty films selected by the Foundation’s team are screened at Sala BBK in Bilbao. The films chosen to take part in the festival tell human and social stories that in one way or another are related to the world of football.

Football as a social phenomenon
The idea is to reflect on the role of football at a social level and as a cultural phenomenon based on the ideas expressed in different films.
The selection made by the Foundation’s team seeks to show the social moment that football is going through at any given time.
As a whole, the programme of the Thinking Football Film Festival helps us to understand better the power of the football industry in today’s world and the enormous influence it has on our society. That is why after the screenings, the Foundation organises film forum sessions, where issues of interest are debated from a point of view that goes beyond this sport . Representatives of the screened film (the production team, the directing team or the main cast), experts in the subject matter and representatives of Athletic Club take part in these debates, in which the regular presence of footballers from our first men’s and women’s teams stands out.
After the screenings, discussions are held on the topics raised. In recent years we have had in these debates important people from the world of football such as Osvaldo Ardiles, Alfonsinho, Rachid Mekhloufi, Lee Dixon, Thomas Hitzlsperger, Stefan Majewski, David May, Bob Bradley, Georgios Samaras or Ledley King, as well as Athletic football players such as Aritz Aduriz, Ainhoa Tirapu, Carlos Gurpegui, Erika Vázquez, Iñaki Williams, Marta Unzué and Óscar de Marcos. The latter’s band, Orsai, consisting of the Athletic players Asier Villalibre, Dani García, Íñigo Lekue, Mikel Vesga, Mikel Balenciaga, and the aforementioned De Marcos, performed at the opening session of the 2021 Thinking.
