Mental Health Network
FOOTBALL TO IMPROVE MENTAL HEALTH
It is a project aimed at mental health patients over 14 years old, mostly with severe mental disorders.
It consists of a series of weekly indoor football and multisport training sessions, carried out in Osakidetza Day Centres and other associations linked to the Basque public health network. They are led by technicians from the Athletic Club Foundation who work on physical issues, and some others such as commitment, teamwork, personal hygiene and healthy habits in them.

PEOPLE WITH MENTAL ILLNESSES ARE ACCOMPANIED EACH SEASON.
+ 1.720
ACCUMULATED TRAINING HOURS PER YEAR.
One of the factors that negatively affects the quality of life of psychotic patients is the decrease in physical health and the deterioration of social relations.
This project aims to increase the quality of life of these patients by planning recurrent group sports activities.
With the contribution of the Athletic Club Foundation and its technical staff, we work to support the achievement of therapeutic objectives, promote the socialisation of patients with mental illnesses and fight against the stigma of mental illnesses by making them more visible, using community resources (local sports centres, etc.) and organising other reinforcement activities such as visits to the Museum, Lezama, etc.
We train every week, in a football or multisport session adapted to the characteristics of each group
Throughout the season, as the groups become stronger, we organise recreational activities such as visits to the Athletic Club museum, ticket distribution for Athletic Club Women and Bilbao Athletic matches, outings to help with reforestation, etc.
Finally, in mid-June, we organise the Futbola Buruan cup, an activity with football matches and multisport sessions in which we bring together all the groups from the different mental health centres and collaborating associations. On this day we bring together more than five hundred participants in the Lezama sports facilities, in a morning of celebration that strengthens their self-esteem and contributes to their process of resocialization.
During the sessions, each patient is given an exhaustive personalised accompaniment, based on the premiss that each of them is a different person with different needs. Our technicians play a special role in this process, since they are perceived by the patients as friends, companions and guides. These bonds, which are sometimes difficult to establish, are very important, so the technicians involved must be, if possible, the same and not change.
