The planting, organized by Athletic Club Fundazioa together with Lurgaia, is part of the CO₂ compensation project linked to the Club’s sporting trips throughout the season
Athletic Club Fundazioa, together with Lurgaia, has carried out a new reforestation day in the Undabaso area, within the Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve, where around 130 people participated in planting approximately 500 native trees. The expedition set off at 9:30 a.m. from the San Mamés esplanade to complete a morning of collaborative work in support of Bizkaia’s natural environment.
Associations such as Bizitegi, which supports people in situations of social exclusion, and Adsis, which works with young people and vulnerable groups, took part in the day. Various mental health resources from the Basque public health network also participated, including the hospitals of Barakaldo, Zaldibar, Durango, Sestao, and Zamudio, as well as Eragintza, which focuses on the social and labor inclusion of people with mental illness; Emaús, a reference in labor inclusion and social economy; and Tantak, an NGO linked to raising awareness and protecting the oceans.
The initiative also included Fundazioa’s own projects, such as Utopía, a socio-educational program focused on inclusion through sport, and Walking Football Fundazioa Athletic Club, an initiative that promotes adapted football for older adults, encouraging physical activity and social connections. Club employees also actively participated in the day.
With this action, the project has now surpassed 10,000 trees planted in Urdaibai, consolidating an initiative that seeks to offset the carbon footprint generated by the Club’s sporting activity.
A year of increased international activity
The action is particularly significant in a season with a notable number of trips. In July, Genuine Athletic Club Fundazioa participated in the Genuine World Cup held in Houston, an international inclusive football tournament that brings together teams from different countries.
Similarly, between September and December, there were seven trips to England for the Youth League, in addition to the regular trips of the first women’s and men’s teams throughout the season.
With this new planting, Fundazioa continues to advance a model of responsible sporting activity, in which competitive growth is accompanied by a real commitment to the environment and to people.
