THE HEART OF ATHLETIC CLUB
From its beginnings, the Foundation's mission was practically focused on a single area of work: the youth academy and grassroots sport.
Thus, the comprehensive training of young footballers from our area, in close collaboration with the associated clubs, has been and is one of the basic pillars of Athletic Club’s identity.
To ensure its success, the foundation (Fundazioa) allocates significant financial and human resources to this essential pillar. Nearly 80% of the Foundation’s contracted staff – almost fifty people – who are sports technicians, doctors and physiotherapists. A good example of the extent to which commitment to the youth academy forms part of the DNA of the Foundation and Athletic Club.
Youth academy: The essence of Athletic Club
Athletic Club’s life depends on its youth academy, as it could not compete (or even exist) without a strong and constantly improving youth academy, precisely because the home-grown players make up its identity.
Consequently, the objective of Athletic Club and the Foundation is that every player in our territorial environment can have access to the best sports and educational training. It is a project carried out in collaboration with various associated clubs.

Developed in our facilities in Lezama
In addition to the work carried out in the high-performance centre that is Lezama, in order to reach the almost 40,000 players who play on the fields of Bizkaia every weekend, the Foundation maintains a training project for grassroots football trainers.
Thus, Athletic Club technicians work hand in hand with practically all the football clubs in Bizkaia and with the rest of the associated clubs implementing the Athletic Club methodology. The training is designed to achieve excellence in working with young players, and covers issues relating to the organisation of time and space in training sessions, to communication applied to the task of the coach, as well as training in psychology, motor skills, specific training for goalkeepers, game models, motor skills, nutrition and child protection.

Gurpegui and Nekane know Lezama perfectly well and have closely followed the career of dozens of footballers who have grown up enjoying football. Their story is a tribute to all the technical staff of non-professional clubs who make it possible for so many boys and girls in our society to be happy training and playing football every weekend.
