Athletic Club Foundation and Bilbao Council will work hand in hand towards a more sustainable mobility in the city. A collaborative programme was presented in San Mames by Aitor Elizegi, president of the Athletic Club, Juan Carlos Ercoreca, president of the Athletic Club Foundation, and Alfonso Gil, Deputy Mayor and Councilor for Mobility and Sustainability of the Bilbao City Council. The programme aimed at achieving a more sustainable mobility in the city. These Sustainability Initiatives have been presented within the framework of the EUROPEAN MOBILITY WEEK, taking place in Bilbao this week. The main goal of the campaign is to raise awareness and conciousness about the negative effects that an irrational car use in the city have on public health and the environment. The campaign, targeted at citizens, organizations and policy makers, highlights all the social, environmental and economic benefits of using more sustainable means of transport such as public transport, cycling and journeys on foot.
Among the measures announced in the programme, the first one has to do with the creation of a bicycle parking with availabily for 100 bicycles, in the immediate surroundings of San Mames. The parking capacity will be soon extended to 200 bicycles so that more and more fans can attend the stadium in this means of transport.
This agreement is part of a recently created framework, developed by the Foundation, whose medium-term objective is to make Athletic Club a 100% sustainable entity. For this, the Foundation is working on different projects and actions intended to reduce the generation of waste in San Mamés (and recycling), compensate the carbon footprint generated, enhance the use of renewable energy and control the energy expenditure. This also seeks to manage the water in the facilities in a more sustainable manner and raise awareness of the need for a sustainable relationship and integration with the environment during match days.
